Professional, scientific and technical services lead employment increases in June 2023

June 2023 saw a repeat of the same trends observed earlier this year with an increase in employment, led by Professional, scientific and technical services, and a drop in unemployment. Additionally, most other indicators are in on a positive territory, particularly manufacturing sales, wholesale trade, international exports, restaurant receipts, and resurgent building permits.

In negative economic news, inflation remains stubbornly high at more than 5% which has led to a rise in interest rates, average weekly wage increases are below the rate of inflation, housing starts are in decline, and the number of individuals of working age not participating in the labor force is on the rise. Finally, the percentage increase in retail trade is below the rate of inflation suggesting the retail trade is declining in real terms.
