Manufacturing sales, trade, international exports, and restaurant receipts display positive start to 2023

March 2023 saw much of the same positive trends observed in 2022 with an increase in employment and a drop in unemployment. Additionally, most other indicators have started 2023 on a positive note, particularly manufacturing sales, wholesale trade, international exports, restaurant receipts, and retail trade. Vehicle sales continue to increase driven by minivans, sport-utility vehicles, and light and heavy trucks and housing starts surged on the strength of apartment/condo units.

In negative economic news, inflation remains stubbornly high at 5.9% which has led to a rise in interest rates, average weekly wage increases are below the rate of inflation, building permits (a leading indicator of construction activity) are in decline, and the number of individuals of working age not participating in the labor force is on the rise.
