February saw a continuation in employment growth with an increase by 5.6% over the same period in 2021.

February saw a surge in employment growth with employment up by 5.6% or 30,100 positions in February 2022 over the February 2021. This comes after 24,600 positions were added in January 2022 over the same period in 2021.
In addition, all other major indicators ended 2021 on the positive side, except for new motor vehicle sales.
In the first month of 2022, exports remain elevated as are non-residential building permits. Areas of concern remain in rising inflation and interest rates, slow population growth, a downturn in housing starts, and wage increases below the rate of inflation.

February saw a surge in employment growth with employment up by 5.6% or 30,100 positions in February 2022 over the February 2021. This comes after 24,600 positions were added in January 2022 over the same period in 2021.
In addition, all other major indicators ended 2021 on the positive side, except for new motor vehicle sales.
In the first month of 2022, exports remain elevated as are non-residential building permits. Areas of concern remain in rising inflation and interest rates, slow population growth, a downturn in housing starts, and wage increases below the rate of inflation.

Total average year-to-date employment in Saskatchewan was up by 5.1% or 27,350 positions in February 2022 over the same period in 2021.
- Year-to-date employment was up in: Utilities (150), Manufacturing (550), Wholesale and Retail Trade (9,750), Transportation and warehousing (2,000), Finance, insurance, real estate and leasing (5,300), Business, building and other support services (800), Educational services (4,950), Health care and social assistance (3,050), Information, culture and recreation (4,550), and Accommodation and food services (2,600).
- Year-to-date employment was down in: Agriculture (-6,250), Resource Extraction (-2,150), Professional, scientific and technical services (-100), Other services (-2,950), and public administration (-950).
In the first two months of 2022 the majority of year-to-date employment gains were in full-time employment: 20,300 full-time positions versus 7,050 part-time positions.
The average year-to-date unemployment rate moved from 7.8% in February 2021 to 5.4% in February 2022. Year-to-date, the average number of unemployed was down -13,150 to 32,200 in February 2022 from 45,350 in February 2021. In addition, the number of those of labour force age but not in the labour force decreased by -10,550 over the same period as individuals re-enter the labour market with improving prospects.
Year-to-date, December 2021 average weekly earnings were up 1.4% over December 2020.
- Sub-sectors that posted increases were: Goods producing industries (2.3%), Mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction (9.7%), and Construction (2.2%).

December 2021 year-to-date retail trade was up by 11.8% over the same period in 2020.
- Sub-sectors that posted increases: New car dealers (7.3%), Used car dealers (48.8%), Gasoline stations (20.7%), Furniture and home furnishings stores (17.9%), Building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers (23.3%), Health and personal care stores (5.5%), Clothing and clothing accessories stores (22.8%), Sporting goods, hobby, book and music stores (14.0%), Grocery stores (4.0%), Beer, wine and liquor stores (5.0%), General merchandise stores (14.0%), and all other (9.8%).
- Sub-sectors that posted decreases: Electronics and appliance stores (-1.9%).
With limited vehicle supply, December 2021 year-to-date new motor vehicle (units) sales were down -1.4% from December 2020. New minivans, sport-utility vehicles, light and heavy trucks, vans and buses sales were down -2.7% , however new passenger cars sales were up 11.2%.
December 2021 year-to-date restaurant receipts were up 18.2% over the same period in 2020.
- Within restaurant receipts, all categories posted increases including Special food services (27.6%), Drinking places (alcoholic beverages) (9.2%), Full-service restaurants (18.3%), and Limited-service eating places (18.1%).
December 2021 year-to-date retail trade was up by 11.8% over the same period in 2020.
- Sub-sectors that posted increases: New car dealers (7.3%), Used car dealers (48.8%), Gasoline stations (20.7%), Furniture and home furnishings stores (17.9%), Building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers (23.3%), Health and personal care stores (5.5%), Clothing and clothing accessories stores (22.8%), Sporting goods, hobby, book and music stores (14.0%), Grocery stores (4.0%), Beer, wine and liquor stores (5.0%), General merchandise stores (14.0%), and all other (9.8%).

- Sub-sectors that posted increases were: Food manufacturing sales (38.8%), Machinery manufacturing sales (23.4%), Fabricated metal product manufacturing sales (6.9%), and All other Manufacturing sales (53.2%).
December 2021 year-to-date wholesale trade was up 15.8% over the same period in 2020.
- Sub-sectors that posted increases were: Farm product merchant wholesalers (26.5%), Agricultural supplies merchant wholesalers (17.7%), Machinery, equipment and supplies merchant wholesalers (17.8%), Building material and supplies merchant wholesalers (12.3%), and all other (16.6%).
- Sub-sectors that posted decreases were: Food, beverage and tobacco merchant wholesalers (-13.5%).

- Sub-sectors that posted decreases were: Farm, fishing and intermediate food products (-25.1%), Metal and non-metallic mineral products (-50.0%), Forestry products and building and packaging materials (-14.5%), Electronic and electrical equipment and parts (-42.9%), and Consumer goods (-25.7%).

- Year-to-date decreases: singles (-2 units or -1.2%), semi-detached (-18 units or -60.0%), apartment and other types (-129 units or -44.6%).

Contributing to population growth was a modest bounce-back in international immigration to 3,076 from 1,769 in the previous quarter and a higher than expected natural increase (births less deaths). Net inter-provincial migration has been negative every quarter since Q2 2013.

After decreasing by -5.2% in 2020, Saskatchewan’s real GDP expanded by 3.8% in 2021. According to the Conference Board of Canada it in December 2021 forecast, the province's real GDP is forecasted to grow by 4.3% in 2022.
With the post pandemic recovery in full swing in most jurisdictions, on March 2, 2022, the Bank of Canada raised its benchmark rate to 0.5 percent. Inflation is now being viewed as widely entrenched. This rate hike is up from the floor of 0.25 percent it held for much of the COVID-19 pandemic. This was the central bank’s first-rate hike since October 2018 and, as expected, was followed by a further 0.5 percent on April 13, 2022 to 1 percent, acknowledging that the Ukraine conflict has added further inflationary pressures.
