Professional, scientific, and technical services, education, and logistics industries lead surge in employment growth in first two months of 2024

Stephen Johnson
MA
Chief Economist
The first two months of 2024 saw another uptick in the annual average rate of employment growth to 2.4%. Growth has been led by employment in higher paying full-time positions in Professional, scientific, and technical services industry, education, and logistics. The unemployment rate and the number of unemployed are on the rise despite increasing employment as the growth in the labor force outstrips gains in employment. Growth in housing starts stalled in February 2024 notably in apartments In the first month of 2024, most of the other indicators are in decline or slowing: building permits, international exports, retail trade, and manufacturing shipments.
At 1.9%, inflation is showing clear signs of easing with the promise of future monetary easing.
